DPC – An emerging alternative to traditional healthcare goes Mainstream

837% growth in DPC Members between 2017 and 2025

A recent industry report from Hint Health, conducted on over 2,700 DPC clinicians and their 1.4 million members, shows that DPC membership grew by 837% per capita between 2017 and 2025, with practices now operating across all 50 states. What began as a small movement among independent physicians is now becoming a demonstrable force.

What This Means for Employers

Rising premiums and increasing deductibles with no improvement in health outcomes leave employers frustrated. At the same time, employees delay care because of doctor access issues as well as higher out-of-pocket costs, leading to more severe and costly episodes later.

Direct Primary Care was created to fix all that.

One of the most striking findings from the report is that the majority of active DPC memberships nationwide are now employer-sponsored. This suggests that businesses are adopting this model as a long-term healthcare strategy. Employers investing in DPC are not only lowering costs but also building healthier, more engaged, and more loyal teams.

What this means for clinicians

Physician burnout remains high at 45%. In 2025, over 800 family medicine residency spots
remained unfilled, with relatively low pay and worsening working conditions exacerbating the
primary care shortage.

DPC is a way out. After transitioning to DPC, clinicians reported a 48% reduction in burnout and a 68% increase in overall job satisfaction.

Direct Primary Care allows clinics to focus on patient relationships rather than insurance billing, and gives providers more time to deliver meaningful care and rediscover the joy of practicing medicine.

The Human Side of the Numbers

The report also reveals something harder to measure, but equally as important.

DPC patients are communicating more frequently with their providers and building ongoing relationships instead of only seeking care when something goes wrong.

That preventative attitude compounds. When patients have easy access to a doctor they trust, many health issues can be addressed earlier, often before they escalate into urgent care or hospital visits.

A Glimpse Into the Future
